Mould Making

Why make your own Moulds?

As you will see from the photographs of the Garland Pot mould, it comes complete with an inner core which some manufacturers would make an additional charge for (all the moulds I make of urns, troughs etc have the inner core included with them),  which also incorporates provision for a drainage hole in the bottom of the pot.

All the fibreglass cases/jackets are made in as few pieces as possible to ensure the seam marks are kept to a minimum on the finished product, but ease of dismantling the filled mould is also taken into account when deciding how many pieces the case/jacket should comprise of.

As a rough guide the moulds are priced on the basis of approximately ten times the wholesale price of each individual item.  For example the Garland Pot mould pictured here would cost £500 - when I produced and sold concrete items to garden centres etc.,  each Garland Pot cost £50.00, but this is intended as a guide only to you, and your selling price is up to you, as you will know the market and mark up achievable in the area in which you are from.

Obviously, I cannot guarantee how many items you will produce from each mould, this depends entirely on how careful you and your workforce handle  the moulds, as well as your expertise and knowledge of taking moulds apart,  but every mould I produce is designed to take apart easily with a view to producing as many items as possible.

When I made and sold the concrete items, I can say without any hesitation that many of my moulds reproduced many hundreds of copies, and in some cases considerably more. As I said that is entirely up to you.   Not only have I been able to produce many, many  copies from each mould, some of the moulds have lasted me five or six years but again they have been very carefully looked after.

If you are unsure of your ability and expertise, then I can teach and advise you!  I think you will find my course rates to be very competitive as well as very informative and helpful.

As well as advising and showing you with regard to mould making and the final stage of taking a mould apart in such a way to help to maintain it in peak condition to enable as many copies as possible to be obtained, I can also teach you my technique of finishing each item to make it look "aged",  which on the whole appeals to the general public.

On a 2 day course, it will not be possible to fully complete a mid-range size mould (eg., one of the "Four Seasons") but you would learn the mould making process from beginning to end of a small mould (eg. the Green Man or Green Woman)

If you are already in the mould making business but a little unsure of one or two things, then a day course would be probably be what you need and would be of much assistance to you.  Follow up assistance by phone after you have attended a course would also be available.
